Stone features that face live flames (think fireplaces, pizza ovens, or backyard fire pits) must do more than look good. They have to stay structurally sound at temperatures that can top 1000 °C and survive Ontario’s freeze-thaw swings. Choosing the correct fireproof mortar for stone or high-heat stone adhesive is essential for meeting both performance expectations and Ontario Building Code (OBC) requirements.

What Makes a Mortar or Adhesive Fireproof?

Fireproof products differ from standard “heat-resistant” mixes in both chemistry and performance.

Fireproof vs. heat-resistant

Heat-resistant mixes handle grilling temperatures (≈ 300 °C) but degrade in direct flame.

  • Fireproof or refractory blends remain intact well past 1,000 °C, supporting full-bed masonry and structural fireboxes.

Fireproof Mortar Ingredients

  • Calcium-aluminate cement: develops strength quickly at high heat.
  • Refractory aggregates: alumina or chamotte particles resist melting and shrinkage.
  • Silica-based binders: buffer thermal shock, limiting hairline cracks.

Temperature ratings

Refractory mortars certified to ASTM C199 routinely withstand 1399 °C without joint failure—far above what wood-burning appliances generate.

Types of Fireproof Mortars Used in Ontario

When working with fireproof adhesives, you have options in composition and setting methods.

Refractory Mortar

Designed specifically for masonry fireplaces, chimney liners, and outdoor wood-burning ovens. Products that carry an ASTM C199 label typically satisfy OBC § 9.22 for non-combustible linings.

High-Temperature Cement

Portland-free formulations are ideal for fire pits, BBQ islands, and pizza-oven domes. Their low-shrink chemistry reduces cracking during rapid heat-up and cool-down cycles.

Air-Setting vs. Heat-Setting Mortars

Type Cure Method Best For
Air-setting Hardens at room temperature in 24 h. Thin-stone veneer, quick weekend builds.
Heat-setting Final cure completes during first slow burn. Heavy-duty fireboxes, commercial ovens.

Fireproof Stone Adhesives

When a full mortar bed is impractical, like when patching a loose veneer or sealing a metal-to-stone seam, high-heat adhesives step in.

  • High-temperature silicone: flexible, ideal for gasket-like joints around doors or clean-out covers.
  • Refractory epoxy: thin-set repairs where bed depth must stay under 3 mm.

Note: These adhesives are not structural and will degrade if exposed to open flame for extended periods. Reserve them for cosmetic stone or perimeter seams.

Ontario Building Code Considerations

  • OBC § 9.22 outlines minimum clearances, hearth extensions, and non-combustible material requirements.
  • Fire-rated mortar is mandatory for masonry chimneys, wood-burning fireplaces, and exterior fire features connected to a dwelling.
  • Municipal bylaws can add site-specific rules. Always confirm with your local building inspector before mixing a batch.

Application Best Practices

  1. Clean & dry substrates: Dust or moisture will weaken the bond.
  1. Joint spacing: Maintain 3 – 6 mm gaps to accommodate thermal expansion.
  1. Cure times: Air-set mixes need a full 24 h before the first fire; heat-set blends often require a 6 h low-temperature ramp burn.

Ideal Use Cases for Refractory Mortar

  • Indoor masonry fireplaces and chimney liners.
  • Outdoor pizza ovens, BBQ surrounds, and fire pits.
  • Retaining walls incorporating fire bowls or linear burners.

Product Selection Tips

If you need mortar for brick used near open flame, you need to be careful with your selection. Make sure you:

  • Match the rating: Verify that the product’s maximum service temperature exceeds your appliance’s peak firebox temperature.
  • Check stone compatibility: Limestone and sandstone expand differently from granite; choose a mortar with similar thermal movement.
  • Read compliance labels: Look for ASTM C199, CSA-A405, or explicit “OBC compatible” notes on the technical data sheet.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Now, make sure NOT to:

  • Use standard Type N or Type S mortar; spalling is inevitable under direct flame.
  • Install over damp stone; trapped steam can crack joints on first firing.
  • Make trowell beds thicker than manufacturer limits; excess thickness pulls water and weakens the mix.

A natural stone fireplace might just be the investment you need. Not convinced? If you use premium materials like limestone, granite, or ledgestone, you might just make more on the potential return, especially if you don’t already have a fireplace. In this article, we explain how a well-executed natural stone fireplace surround can significantly boost your home’s resale value, especially in a competitive real estate market.

Why Buyers Value Natural Stone Fireplace Features

Natural stone immediately communicates quality. It’s timeless, elegant, and synonymous with high-end construction. In both traditional and contemporary homes, buyers view stone features as long-lasting and low-maintenance. Compared to prefabricated or tiled alternatives, a natural stone fireplace surround feels permanent and custom-built—exactly the type of detail that makes a home feel special.

Luxury buyers, in particular, are drawn to properties with natural finishes that signal craftsmanship. Stone fireplaces are common in custom homes, ski chalets, and luxury builds for a reason: they deliver both beauty and function. And in colder climates like Canada, a fireplace is very practical when the snow falls.

4 Ways a Natural Stone Fireplace Surround Increases Home Value

1. Elevates Interior Design Appeal

Fireplaces are one of the first things buyers notice during a showing. A stone surround becomes the room’s anchor, enhancing everything from modern open-concept layouts to cozy cottage-style interiors. Because natural stone comes in a wide range of colours and textures, it’s easy to find a look that fits your home’s design—and one that won’t go out of style in five years.

2. Adds Functional, Energy-Efficient Heating

Fireplaces with wood-burning or gas inserts can serve as secondary heating sources, which is especially appealing in Canadian winters. A natural stone surround helps retain and radiate heat, offering practical value beyond aesthetics.

3. Signals Investment in Premium Materials

Real estate appraisers and buyers alike recognize the difference between faux finishes and real stone. A natural stone fireplace surround reflects the same quality cues as granite countertops or hardwood floors. Unlike trendy upgrades, stone never feels dated—and it often outlasts the home itself. That kind of longevity enhances both perceived and real value.

4. Supports Faster, Higher-Priced Sales

When your home stands out visually, it sells faster. A unique architectural feature like a natural stone fireplace can elevate your listing photos, spark buyer interest, and attract those looking for turnkey properties. If you’re aiming for a premium listing price, this upgrade helps justify it.

Is the Cost Justified? Does a Fireplace Increase Home Value?

The ROI on fireplace renovation projects can reach 70% or more, depending on your location and the quality of the installation. In hot markets across Ontario, homeowners may see an increase of 6-12% in overall home value after a fireplace upgrade. Unlike tile or prefab surrounds, natural stone doesn’t need to be replaced or refinished. Therefore, its long lifespan alone makes it a smart long-term investment.

Final Thoughts: Invest in Natural Stone Today!

A natural stone fireplace surround offers warmth, lasting value in design, energy efficiency, and resale appeal. If you’re renovating with resale in mind, you want to focus on home upgrades that add resale value. Fortunately, this project checks every box: timeless style, practical benefits, and real return on investment.

Ready to invest in your home’s future? At Grand River Natural Stone, we supply premium materials to help you build a fireplace feature that stands the test of time. Visit one of our four locations across Southern Ontario or speak with our team today.

Your fireplace is going to be very busy over the holiday season, providing warmth and a cozy atmosphere throughout the home. Fireplace Safety Tips For The Holidays

The holiday season brings joy, laughter, and warmth, often accompanied by a cozy fire in the fireplace. However, it’s essential to follow safety guidelines to ensure the festivities aren’t ruined by an accident. Here are our top five fireplace safety tips for the holiday season:

Install a Mesh Cap Screen on the Top of Your Chimney

Chimney caps not only prevent critters and debris from blocking your chimney, but they also keep embers and sparks from escaping and landing on your roof. Make sure it’s secure and in good condition.

Keep the Hearth Clear of Decorations and Clutter

While it’s tempting to decorate the fireplace with stockings and ornaments, it’s important to maintain a safe distance. Only hang stockings on the mantel when the fireplace is not in use, and relocate them before you light a fire. Keep other flammable decorations well away from the hearth area.

Place Mesh Gates Around the Fireplace Opening

Mesh gates can prevent curious pets or young children from getting too close to the fire. Ensure the gate is sturdy and high enough that it can’t be easily toppled or climbed over.

Let Ashes Completely Cool

Before removing and disposing of ashes, ensure they’ve completely cooled. This can take several hours, or even up to a day. Store ashes in a metal container with a tight lid, far away from your house or any flammable materials.

Close Fireplace Doors While the Fire is Burning, If You Have Them

Glass or metal fireplace doors provide an extra layer of protection, preventing sparks from escaping into the room. Always remember to close them once your fire is established, and only open them when adding more wood.

Building a Stone Fireplace Starts with Great Stone

Natural stone is trending this year, and while there are many areas and projects within your home where you can use full bed or thin stone veneer, none is as iconic as a fireplace. Read why you should build a stone fireplace below from our experts.

Building a New Stone Fireplace

If you don’t have a fireplace in your great room, then consider building one. Building an indoor stone fireplace isn’t a DIY job, though. For new gas or wood-burning fireplaces, you’ll need to have a professional involved from inception to execution.

However, if you have an existing fireplace that needs a facelift, then you can certainly embark on a DIY stone fireplace project, if you choose the right stone for the job. Whether you’re building new or refacing a brick fireplace, the quality of the stone is critical.

Choosing Your Fireplace Stone

When choosing your stone, consider going local. There are over 65 local quarries in Ontario[1] that quarry and cut ledgestone, fieldstone, limestone and granite. Not only will you reduce your environmental footprint by choosing a locally sourced stone, but you can be sure of the quality.

In addition to the quality of the stone, consider the texture and colour when you’re designing your fireplace. Choose a stone product that will complement existing features in your home and will highlight the unique elements of your fireplace like the mantle and chimney.

Look for a Lifetime Warranty

Many stone manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty on their products, so it’s worth asking about the warranty before choosing the stone you’ll work with. The heat rating on the stone product is also extremely important when choosing the right stone for your fireplace.

Other Timeless Projects With Natural Stone

Stone and stone veneer products are durable, local and affordable, which makes them a great material to use in a variety of other projects around your home, including:

  • Curio shelves
  • Living room walls
  • Stone backsplashes
  • Atriums
  • Bar or wine cellars
  • Doorways and passageways

Building a Stone Fireplace Starts with Great Stone

One of the reasons that natural stone veneer is so popular is because of the rough, elegant, earthy beauty it brings to a project. Plus, thin stone veneer can add texture and colour to virtually any room without the worry about the weight demands that full bed stone or traditional stone may add to the structure you’re enhancing.

Adding stone to your home’s interior is a great winter endeavour and depending on the project might be one that you can tackle yourself. Talk to the experts at Grand River Natural Stone about the project you’re considering, and we’ll help you choose the stone that will best suit your design and build needs.

Backyard Fire Features

Fire features are the perfect way to add some flare to your backyard décor. They can contribute both light and heat to create a cozy atmosphere that your family and friends will want to spend time in, especially on those perfect summer evenings.
If you’re only picturing a campfire, think again! There are many alternative options to creatively incorporate fire into your outdoor space. Check out some of these ideas below and don’t hesitate to contact us if you’d like to discuss your ideas.

Fire Features That Will Brighten Your Space Instantly

Fire Pits

Of course, fire pits are one of the most classic fire features. Fire pits provide the opportunity to light a fire that offers ample heat to those sitting around it, gives you that traditional desired crackle and pop of the firewood, and makes cooking delicious s’mores possible. The best thing about fire pits are that they are relatively easy to build yourself, right into your lawn.

Fire Bowls

Fire Bowl

Fire bowls are very similar to fire pits. They look particularly stunning around a patio sitting area or pool and come in a range of bowl sizes, shapes and colours, which can also include an additional water feature to effectively blend the elements for a truly dynamic feature. You can choose from match lit or electronically controlled with a remote, making turning your fire bowl on and off easy and convenient.

Fire Tables

Fire tables have been designed to combine fun with functionality. They function as a useful table but also have the option of lighting a small fire in the middle of them to emit heat and create a nice ambience for get togethers.

Fireplaces

Outdoor fireplaces are an especially popular trend, ranging from majestic intricate fireplaces, or free-standing fireplaces that can be admired from either side and act as a divider, for example between sitting areas or an outdoor kitchen area. Whether you’re going for a more rustic vibe or modern appeal, a fireplace is a traditional feature that never goes out of style.

Fire Walls

Fire walls serve little functional purpose and exist mostly to look nice. They’re built right into an outdoor wall and provide the beauty of burning flames much like a gas fireplace does. If you’re looking to make a statement, a fire wall is certainly an attractive and eye-catching option!
Be sure to check out our gallery for more inspiring fire feature and outdoor living ideas.

We Have The Fire Features You Need

Stone is the in-vogue material for many interior décor styles right now, but what do you do if you have a pre-existing brick fireplace? Don’t worry, you won’t have to rip it out and start fresh. Instead, you can install a stone veneer right over top of the brick, getting the look you want without the mess of a total rebuild. Here’s how to install a stone veneer over a brick fireplace.

Materials and Tools You’ll Need

Some of the tools and materials you may need include:

  • Stone veneer of your choice
  • Trowel
  • Pointing tools and grout bags
  • Clean container for your mortar
  • Metal Lath or Concrete Board
  • Thin set mortar mix

How to Install Stone Veneer Over a Brick Fireplace

  • Step One: Going over an existing fireplace requires one of two options. A polyurethane or urethane adhesive in tubes, or a thin set mortar mix. At Grand River Natural Stone, we recommend the thin set mortar, which is specifically designed for this type of application, and already includes epoxy adhesive binders.
  • Step Two: Prior to installing your stone, you should ensure that the existing fireplace bricks are uniform, clean, and free of loose paint or particles. This will make installing the stone easier. If your brick is particularly porous, you will want to install metal lath or concrete board over it before following the next steps.
    • If using metal lath, apply it horizontally, overlapping the edges, with the rough ‘cups’ pointing upwards (like a cheese grater).
  • Step Three: Apply a scratch coat of mortar directly to the brick (or lath, or concrete board), ensuring that it is wet enough to form a proper bond. Also, be sure to apply enough pressure to the mortar to aid with adhesion.
  • Step Four: Before adhering the veneer, you should create a plan for where each stone will go in the overall design, which will help you get a look you’ll be happy with. When selecting your veneer in the first place, try to avoid overly large or small stones. These can ruin the illusion that the stone is really holding up the fireplace. Once you have laid out your pieces, you can begin adding stone to the wall.
  • Step Five: Apply a separate layer of mortar to the back of each stone. The layer should be a half-inch thick at a minimum. Adding more mortar at the edges is also useful as it can help the stone adhere.
  • Step Six: Next, press each stone into place, keeping the joints a uniform thickness. Make sure to work from the corners inwards and alternating the long and short pieces on the corners. Install from the top down to prevent mortar from dripping onto your already adhered stones. However, if you’re dry stacking your veneer (no visible mortar joints) you can work from the bottom up.
  • Step Seven: Depending on the style of stone that you have chosen you may need to fill the joints with mortar. You can pipe this in with a grout bag, and then as a finishing touch, strike the grout once firm to clean up the lines.

There are many more tricks you can learn to cut and place the stones more efficiently. Of course, you should be sure to follow the specific instructions from your stone manufacturer or supplier.

A fireplace is the center of your home in the winter. Update your brick fireplace with a stone veneer overlay to make it a more magical centerpiece. Find the materials and information you need to complete this project this winter. Contact us today.

Benefits of Thin Stone Veneer For Your Fireplace

As winter is quickly approaching, you’ll want to spend more time indoors around the fireplace.

And while cozying up to the warmth coming from your fireplace is paramount, you also want to enjoy looking at it too.

That’s where thin stone veneer comes in.

Beautiful, durable and easy to install, thin stone veneer is the perfect way to quickly and affordably spruce up the appearance of your fireplace.

But that’s just the start. There are other terrific advantages of thin stone veneer you’re sure to love.

Natural or Synthetic: The Choice Is Yours

  • Natural: Made by nature and incredibly gorgeous, an authentic stone veneer is heavier than artificial veneer. However, it’s cut thinly enough so that weight isn’t an issue.
  • Synthetic: You’d never tell it was manmade. Synthetic stone veneer looks, feels, and acts like the real thing. This material is the preferred choice for a DIY project.

Versatile

Although it’s versatile for use throughout your home, thin stone veneer is perfect for fireplaces because it is:

  • Lightweight: Full-sized natural stone is very heavy. In fact, it’s possible that you’d have to reinforce your floor when you consider the combined weight of the stone, hearth and mantel. On the other hand, stone veneer is lightweight and doesn’t need to be reinforced.
  • Safe: Thin veneer stone is non-combustible and non-flammable. Whether you’re updating a wood or gas fireplace, thin veneer stone is a smart, safe choice.
  • Easy installation: You don’t need to be a lifelong mason to work with thin veneer stone. With some simple preparation and application tips, you can quickly transform your fireplace.
  • Low maintenance: Once it’s in place, thin stone veneer needs little care. It can handle any weather, (making it perfect for outdoor fireplaces), and doesn’t need repainting or sealing.
  • Interior/exterior: Whether your fireplace is in the basement or the backyard, thin stone veneer will look good and last for years to come.

In addition to fireplaces, thin stone veneer can be used for projects like a kitchen backsplash, backyard patio, and even siding around your home.

Attractive

Whether it’s for an indoor or outdoor fireplace – or something else entirely – thin stone veneer is pleasing to look at.

Modern cutting techniques create the illusion that each individual stone is a lot bigger and fuller than it really is. This creates the impression that your fireplace was built entirely of stone.

There are also plenty of other considerations when it comes to finding the right stone for your project, including:

  • Colour
  • Texture
  • Shape
  • Cut

This thin stone veneer can be applied to a variety of surfaces, including wood, stone and even metal. There’s really no limit to how and where you can use it.

Benefits of Thin Stone Veneer for Fireplace

Excellent insulation

During this time of year, insulation, which is measured in R-Value – is incredibly important.

Stone veneer tends to have higher R-Values than other common materials like brick, wood, and fibreglass. Here’s how it compares to other materials:

Rounded per inch R-Values

With stone veneer, you can create the perfect level of insulation, comfort and style all throughout your home.

Here for all your thin stone veneer needs

Thin stone veneer is the perfect choice if you wish to create a rich appearance without breaking the bank.

Because stone veneer is easy to work with and provides excellent insulation, winter is an ideal time to undertake an installation project for your fireplace. Give us a shout today for a FREE quote on thin veneer products.

A fireplace is a cozy way to spend fall evenings.

And installing thin stone veneer on your indoor or outdoor fireplace is full of great benefits, such as:

  • Giving it a rustic and charming appearance
  • Protecting it from the outdoor elements
  • Extending your enjoyment of the fireplace for the season

The best part is that installing thin veneer stone on your fireplace is quite simple to do – even if it’s a brick fireplace.

Choose your stone veneer

There are two types of stone brick veneer for you to choose from:

  • Authentic: It may come at a higher cost, but it’s a gorgeous, long-lasting choice for your backyard or family room fireplace. Usually it’s heavier than artificial veneer, but is cut thinly enough that weight is not an issue.
  • Artificial: Sometimes known as faux stone. Manmade stone veneer now looks, feels and behaves like the natural version. If you’re planning to do it yourself, artificial stone veneer is lighter, tidier and overall easier to work with.

Preparing to install thin stone veneer

Whether you’re installing authentic or artificial stone veneer to your brick fireplace, the process more or less remains the same.

First, though, you’ll need to clean the surface where the stone will be affixed and remove any:

  • Paint
  • Dirt
  • Dust
  • Debris

If you’re planning to install thin stone veneer directly into a brick or concrete fireplace, you can apply it directly to the surface.

Then, apply a scratch coat (about ½” think) of mortar to the surface and let it cure for 24 hours.

1. Mix the right amount of mortar you’ll need

Usually the mixture is two parts of washed masonry sand to one part of cement.

Stir it up for a minimum of five minutes until the mixture is both think and creamy.

2. Lay the stones out in the pattern you want

If you need to trim the stones to fit your backyard fireplace, you can use a masonry hammer or masonry saw from Grand River Natural Stone.

3. Clean the stones before applying them

After you’ve cut the stones to fit, you’ll need to remove all dust, dirt and loose particles from them.

If necessary, you can even wash them with water.

However you’ll need to wait for them to dry before you install them.

Once dried, you can moisten their backsides with a masonry brush, which will help strengthen the bond between the stone and the mortar.

4. Apply mortar to the back of the stone

Then, press the stone to the fireplace wall.

While you’re pressing it, rotate the stone slightly in order to force some of the mortar to squeeze out around the edges of the stone.

Before the mortar has finally set, remove any extra from the surface of the thin veneer stone with a rag or brush.

Grout

5. Point the joints with grout

When all of the stone veneer elements are in place, grout any large gaps between the stones.

Post-installation maintenance

Once four weeks have passed, you may wish to apply a high-quality sealer to the stone veneer.

  • For an indoor fireplace: Sealing is more of an aesthetic reference, as opposed providing a protective barrier (simply because it won’t be exposed to outdoor elements).
  • For an outdoor fireplace: Even though it’s outside, your fireplace doesn’t need to be sealed. However, if you want to enhance, darken or bring its colour back to life (especially if it’s an older unit), then sealer is an appropriate option.

Applying stone sealer on a regular schedule is completely optional.

Remember: the sealer may change the colouring of your thin veneer stone, so make sure you test it out first in an area of the fireplace where it won’t be noticed.

And since stone veneer is easy to clean, just wash off the sealer with a hose if you aren’t happy with the results. Just make sure you do this within minutes.

Contemporary and Inviting

This stacked-looking stone veneer combined with an accent wall behind it is a great look for a home with contemporary interior décor. This design brings the fireplace forward as the focal point and ensures the TV retracts into the dark wall behind it when not in use.

The Statement Fireplace

Using a dark stone/brick around the fireplace is a less frequent choice, making this design especially striking. If you are considering dressing up a fireplace in a small room and using a dark veneer, ensure the walls and the rest of the colours used in the décor are light and airy.
